What is the current VAT rate in Nigeria?
The current VAT rate in Nigeria is 7.5%, effective from February 2020. This was increased from the previous rate of 5% by the Finance Act 2019. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) administers VAT collection.
How do I add VAT to a price?
To add 7.5% VAT, multiply the amount by 1.075. For example, if an item costs ₦10,000 before VAT, the VAT-inclusive price is ₦10,000 x 1.075 = ₦10,750. The VAT portion is ₦750.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
To find the price before VAT, divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.075. For example, if you paid ₦10,750 including VAT, the original price is ₦10,750 / 1.075 = ₦10,000. The VAT portion was ₦750.
What goods and services are VAT-exempt in Nigeria?
Basic food items, medical and pharmaceutical products, educational materials, baby products, and exported goods and services are VAT-exempt in Nigeria. Agricultural equipment, locally produced fertiliser, and basic public transport are also exempt.
Can I use a custom VAT rate?
Yes. While the default is set to 7.5% (Nigeria's standard rate), you can change it to any percentage. This is useful if you are calculating VAT for goods or services from other countries, or if the rate changes in the future.
